A new docudrama that exposes trafficking in this country was premiered followed by a panel discussion. The film, Cargo: Innocence Lost, by award-winning film director Michael Cory Davis, unveils the dark underworld of sex trafficking.

Is artistic expression a human right?

According to President of the International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance, it absolutely is. So much so, that the recipient of the first annual Los Angeles County Martin Luther King, Jr., Human Rights Hero Award was Glenna Boltuch Avila, fine artist and Director of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership Program (CAP) for her work to enable inner-city youth to exercise their right to artistic expression through art education.

Nineteen-year-old race car driver Niki Lanik, the reigning 2006 Clio Cup Winter Champion, flew around England’s 1.2 mile Brands Hatch Indy circuit track on April 1st and 2nd with the Youth for Human Rights logo prominently displayed. Niki and the Youth for Human Rights UK Car Racing Team brought the vital message of human rights to a packed grandstand with over 30,000 people watching around the track, and to many more watching live television coverage.

Human rights were the focus of a lively fashion and music show featuring the collections of five Los Angeles designers, modeled by aspiring young models and actors. The event was spearheaded by actress Cassandra Hepburn who decided to take action to raise awareness about human rights after attending a recent Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) event. “I decided to produce this event and raise funds for human rights so as to get this valuable message out to others.”
